2 Opiate Receptors and Opioid Peptides: Are They Involved in Drug Addiction?
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION The recent discoveries of the existence of opiate receptors and of endogenous opioid peptides in the central nervous system of animals and man have raised hopes that an understanding of the molecular mechanism of drug addiction may soon be achieved. It is clear from the title of this chapter that that day is not yet here. I will give a brief chronological review of the significant discoveries and developments and will then summarize recent research that bears on the possible involvement of the endogenous opioid system in drug addiction. Background: Chronic opioid use is a major public health problem with significant morbidity. The aim of this study was to investigate factors associated with sustained remission among a sample of Iranian chronic opioid users in Shiraz, Iran. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study to evaluate sustained remission among chronic opiate users aged 20-60 years. Participants included two groups: 365 ...
متن کاملFunctional Dissociation of μ Opioid Receptor Signaling and Endocytosis Implications for the Biology of Opiate Tolerance and Addiction
Opiate analgesia, tolerance, and addiction are mediated by drug-induced activation of the mu opioid receptor. A fundamental question in addiction biology is why exogenous opiate drugs have a high liability for inducing tolerance and addiction while native ligands do not. Studies indicate that highly addictive opiate drugs such as morphine are deficient in their ability to induce the desensitiza...
